COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled that a 2004 law imposing stricter rules on those suing for asbestos-related injuries can be applied to cases pending before the legislation was passed, a move that could frustrate thousands of people seeking claims.
The Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal upheld a verdict of $3.2 million for former contractor Ray Rando, who contracted mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure. The defendants are Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group, and Jacobs Constructors. Rando worked for the companies between 1965 and 1985 as a pipe fitter and welder. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2006.
The Hartlepool Mail, serving Hartlepool, UK, reported the government plans to speed up compensation claims for those affected by mesothelioma. Hartlepool has a high number of mesothelioma cases due to its shipping heritage. Mesothelioma is the most common cause of work-related death in the UK, with the Mail reporting that it is estimated that one out of every 100 men born between 1940 and 1950 will die from the disease.
