Supreme Court could reinstate Travelers asbestos settlement

According to an Associated Press report, on Friday the U.S. Supreme Court said it is reviewing consolidated cases against the Travelers Companies Inc., to reinstate a $500 million settlement and block any new lawsuits against Travelers. The original settlement was established in 1986 in relation to a group of asbestos claims against Johns-Manville Corp., which was once a leading producer. Travelers provided insurance policies for Johns-Manville.

$3.2 million meso verdict upheld

The Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal upheld a verdict of $3.2 million for former contractor Ray Rando, who contracted mesothelioma as a result of asbestos exposure. The defendants are Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group, and Jacobs Constructors. Rando worked for the companies between 1965 and 1985 as a pipe fitter and welder. He was diagnosed with in 2006.

Jury awards $226,000

The Indiana Gazette reported March 15 an Indiana County, Penn., jury awarded $226,000 to the family of George Baroni. A resident of the Homer City area, Baroni worked for Fisher Scientific plant from 1959-1994. The jury determined he had been exposed to asbestos while on the job. He developed mesothelioma and died in 2005 at age 73.

Dana to settle 7,500 asbestos suits

An Associated Press report Nov. 2 announced Dana Corp. has agreed to pay a total of $2 million to more than 7,000 personal injury claimants to settle asbestos lawsuits. The company, an auto-parts supplier, produced gaskets containing . A Nov. 15 hearing was set to review the proposed settlement.
